New perspectives in soft tissue management around natural teeth & implants
Soft tissue management has long been an important part in both periodontal therapy and implant dentistry. Keratinized tissue around natural teeth was first brought up for maintaining periodontal health, followed by soft tissue ridge augmentation for bulking up soft tissue volume on edentulous ridge, and root coverage for treating gingival recession and leveling gingival line. Keratinized tissue can be obtained with epithelialized gingival graft (also known as free gingival graft, FGG) and apically positioned flap. Gingival recession has been well treated with connective tissue graft techniques, known as root coverage. There are so many different surgical techniques being developed including envelope technique, Langer & Langer’s technique, double papilla technique, coronally-positioned technique, Zuchelli’s technique, tunneling technique, VISTA technique and so on. It is essential for a surgeon to choose proper techniques for treating a variety of defects. Connective tissue graft can also be used for increasing soft tissue volume for pontic development or around implants. Donor site techniques facilitate the availability and achievability of the connective tissue, which make it possible to transplant connective tissue in oral cavity. In implant dentistry, not only quantity but also quality of the soft tissue around implants will lead to the long-term stability and success. This course will also address the clinical applications of soft tissue management around implants. A variety of surgical techniques will be introduced to treat different type of soft tissue defects. Concepts and techniques for preventive soft tissue management are also incorporated into this lecture. This presentation focuses on clinical decision-making and surgical techniques by which comprehensive guidelines for soft tissue management can be established.
Learning objectives: 1. To understand the nature of oral soft tissue healing 2. To learn the principles of soft tissue management 3. To apply soft tissue management in both natural teeth and implants 4. To treat soft tissue defects with adequate clinical procedures 5. To incorporate soft tissue considerations and management in our daily practice.
Hands-on: 1. Donor site techniques 2. Recipient site techniques 3. Peri-implant soft tissue management
